Haha, yeah, I’m not opposed to watching The Tree of Life. Though I knew I didn’t want to watch it in theaters, but I wouldn’t mind catching up with it on DVD. Also, just because of everything else I just didn’t get a chance to see Extremely Loud–which I saw you said wasn’t that great. So yeah, not too bad, 7/9 I managed to check out.

Looks like we have similar tastes and guesses for this year. You should give “The Tree of Life” a shot. I actually really enjoyed its wackiness. I don’t think it’s as abstract as people make it out to be, but it’s definitely out there in terms of storytelling. I really think that it can be appreciated more at home on the couch rather than squirming in a theater seat for 2 and a half hours.

That’s the wonderful and sad thing about Sundance, or any film festival, I suppose – on one hand, there are so many diverse and high quality films, but on the other hand, so few of them get distribution deals. I know that Where Do We Go Now? and Monsieur Lazhar have been picked up, so hopefully they’ll show up in a theater near you soon!

Since I’m not there at Sundance I try to do my best to read up on what people are talking about, unfortunately though, I can’t read everything or I can only read about things people post about.

Thank you for the recommendations though and I’ll try to search out more info about the films you mentioned.

These have all gotten a lot of buzz, but I’m sorry to see that you don’t have any documentaries on this list! My favorite film of the festival has probably been Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which is in the documentary premieres category. Where Do We Go Now? and Monsieur Lazhar are up there as well. I’ll be seeing The Raid tomorrow night, though, so hopefully it will be good! ~Nan

I would have to say no, the Oscars are still every bit as prestigious as we all make them out to be, even if we may disagree with them. And when you think about it that’s why I think people that disagree with the Oscars care about them the most . . . it’s because people think that the awards should go to winners that are more deserving.

And also, I think average tv viewers and average moviegoers don’t pay attention at all to the other award honors from “not so high profile” groups.

Playing devil’s advocate here: are the Oscars becoming less prestigious, what with all the various other award ceremonies and much larger Best Picture categories in the past years? It is, of course, the highest honor in the business, but are average viewers becoming immune to happenings on the awards circuit?

I think the thing you have to remember is that not everyone can vote for the Oscars. Sadly it’s only open to members of AMPAS. With any small group of people voting for something, what you get is a representation of they’re thinking . . . which sometimes doesn’t accurately represent a broad range of views or opinions.

It’s probably a big reason why all the critics groups, guilds, and even the Hollywood Foreign Press all have their own awards . . . it’s because a lot of them aren’t represented in The Academy.

It’s also another reason why we have blogs . . . so we can say who we thought was great. You’re definitely right though, it’s what we have so that’s the main reason why we tune in.
